The 2012 Qatar Open for the first time, has become THE second MAJOR WTA tournament of the year and one of only 5 Premier FIVE events, which makes it one of the “BIG 14″ WTA tournaments each year. The winner of Qatar is equivalent to making the semi finals of a Grand Slam singles event in terms of WTA ranking points because both achievements earn 900 points.

The Qatar Open is held at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha, Qatar on Plexipave hard courts and the centre court seats 6,911 spectators. The total prize money for the 2012 women’s tournament is $2,168,400 up from $721,000 in 2011.
The Qatar Open was first held in 2001 and was suspended for two years in 2009 and 2010, whilst Doha hosted the year-end WTA Finals form 2008 to 2010 instead. After beginning again in 2011, Qatar is celebrating the 10-year anniversary as a women’s tour tournament in 2012.
This tournament runs from Saturday 11 February to Sunday 19 February. The singles qualifying event is being held on Saturday and Sunday February 11 and 12. The main draw singles event runs from Monday 13 February through to the Women’s Singles Final day on Sunday 19 February.
The 2011 Qatar Open women’s singles champion was No.2 seed Vera ZVONAREVA who defeated the No.1 seed Caroline WOZNIACKI in the final 6-4, 6-4.
