The Williams Sisters Dominate Wimbledon
Serena Williams was victorious in the Ladies Final on Saturday July 4 defeating 5-time Wimbledon singles champion Venus Williams in straight sets 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to capture her 11th Grand Slam singles title.
On American Independence Day, Serena, by winning the Venus Rosewater Dish trophy for a 3rd time edged ahead of Venus in their head-to-head battles 11-10. In fact, at least one of the Williams sisters has appeared in the Wimbledon Ladies Singles final for 9 of the past 10 years. 8 of these 9 times a Williams has won the final. This year was the 4th all-Williams showdown. Serena has now won 3 of their 4 Wimbledon finals.
Serena has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other current female player and is the only one to win a career Grand Slam. The record number of Grand Slam singles titles by any player is 24 held by Australian Margaret Court.
The younger Williams sister who turns 28 later this year on September 26 is the most recent player (with a run in 2002-2003), either male or female to hold all four Grand Slam titles at once. Serena dubbed this “The Serena Slam”. Despite currently holding The US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon titles miraculously Serena only holds down the world No.2 ranking! More on this topic later…
Venus and Serena the No.4 seeds in the Ladies Doubles draw defeated the Aussie duo and No.3 seeds Sam Stosur and Renae Stubbs in straight sets 7/6 (7-4) 6/4 in the doubles final to make a clean sweep of the Ladies events. By doing this, the Williams sisters claimed back-to-back Wimbledon doubles titles on the hallowed centre court at SW18 and their 4th Wimbledon crown as a team. The other victories at The Championships were in 2000, 2002 and 2008.
The challenge has been laid out to the rest of the field in both singles and doubles. Who can stop their dominance at Wimbledon?
