The 2012 Shanghai Open men’s main draw singles matches will begin on Sunday 7 October at 4pm local time in Shanghai, China. In this post a number of interesting facts about the men’s singles main draw will be provided, including when the draw is made, how the draw works, whom all the different types of participants are and who the seeds are.

The official draw was held in the morning on Friday 5 October at the Rolex Boutique on The Bund with Roger FEDERER and Lleyton HEWITT taking part in the draw ceremony. There are 56 players in the draw divided up between 7 Qualifiers (Q), 4 Wild Cards (WC) and 45 Direct Acceptances. The cut-off date for entry was 20 August 2012. The Shanghai Open is a Masters 1000 category tournament played on Deco Turf hard courts from October 6 to 14.

The Seeds: Only the Top 8 seeded players receive a BYE in the 1st round, whilst seeds 9 to 16 must play a 1st round match. The seeds are selected solely according to the latest ATP Tour rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 1 October 2012.

All of the 16 seeds are placed in preselected positions in the 64-player draw to guarantee that each of the seeds cannot meet another seed until the round of 16. Therefore, the seeded players have the advantage of only playing against players in their first and second rounds that are lower ranked players and outside of the highest 16 ranked players in the draw.

The Wild Cards: The four wild cards went to three Chinese players: ZHANG ZeWU Di, LI Zhe and former World No.1 and dual Grand Slam singles champion Lleyton HEWITT of Australia.

The Qualifiers: The 28-player qualifying tournament began on Saturday 6 October and concludes on Sunday 7 October. Once the 7 players that win the 2nd round of qualifying will qualify for the main draw, OnCourt Advantage will list their names in this post-> Shanghai 2012 Men’s Singles: The Qualifiers.
