Miami is a MAJOR tournament for both the men and women each year because it is 1 of only 4 WTA Premier Mandatory category events each year and 1 of 9 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category events each year.

The 2012 tournament is being held at Tennis Centre at Crandon Park in the Miami-Dade County, in Florida, USA. The court surface is Laykold Cushion Plus hard courts and the stadium court seats 13,800 people. This joint tournament from the outset is being held for the 28th time this year for both the men and the women.
This tournament runs from Monday 19 March to Sunday 1 April. The men’s and women’s singles qualifying event is being held on Monday and Tuesday March 19 and 20. The main draw singles event runs from Tuesday 20 March for the women and Wednesday 21 March for the men through to the Men’s Singles Final day on Sunday 1 April.
The 2011 women’s singles champion was No.8 seed Victoria AZARENKA who defeated No.16 seed Maria SHARAPOVA in the final 6-1, 6-4 to win her second Miami singles title after winning her first in 2009. The 2011 men’s singles champion was No.2 seed Novak DJOKOVIC who defeated No.1 seed Rafael NADAL in the final 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to win his second Miami singles title after capturing his first in 2007.
