The 2012 Canadian Open is the sixth of the nine ATP Tour Masters 1000 tournaments and the sixth of the nine major Premier category tournaments (Premier Mandatory and Premier Five) for the women. The official name of the Canadian Open due to title sponsorship naming rights is the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

Due to the fact that men play in Montreal in odd numbered years and Toronto in even numbered years this year the men are playing at the Rexall Centre at York University in Toronto and the women are playing in Montreal, Quebec at the Uniprix Stadium.
This event was first held in 1881 for the men and 1892 for the women, after Wimbledon and the US Open it is the longest running tournament in tennis history. The court surface is Deco Turf hard courts, the centre court seating capacity in Montreal is 11,659 and the Toronto centre court is 10,300.
This tournament runs from Saturday 4 August to Monday 13 August. The women’s singles qualifying event is being held on Saturday through to Monday August 4 to 6, whilst the men’s qualifying is played on just Saturday and Sunday August 4 and 5. The main draw singles event runs from Tuesday 7 August through to the Singles Final day on Monday 13 August for the women and Monday 6 August to Sunday August 12 for the men.
The 2011 women’s singles champion was Serena WILLIAMS who defeated 10th seeded Samantha STOSUR in the final 6-4, 6-2. The 2011 men’s singles champion was No.1 seed Novak DJOKOVIC who defeated No.6 seed Mardy FISH in the final 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
