Sabine Lisicki won an intense and thrilling match on Centre Court at Wimbledon yesterday 6-4, 2-6, 9-7 in 2 hours and 18 minutes against last year’s runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska. In the 2013 Wimbledon Final Lisicki takes on No.15 seed Marion Bartoli this Saturday at 2pm in London. There were many highlights and great tennis, including those in the above highlight snippets clip of the women’s second semi final match.
After her victory Lisicki said, “There could be no place better to play my first Grand Slam final because I have been dreaming of being Wimbledon champion since I was a little girl. The first time I was here – I can’t remember when – I fell in love with Wimbledon. It was the place I always wanted to play. It was always my dream to play on the Centre Court and win the tournament. The whole atmosphere is so special. It’s so great to have the support of the crowd – there is no better feeling in the world to have it on that beautiful Centre Court. I feel great out there.”
The 23-year-old Lisicki managed to win nine of the last 13 games in the match to stage another fantastic fight back, from the same exact scoreline of 0-3 in the final set as she did when she upset 5-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams.
The German produced 60 winners to Radwanska’s 21 for the match. In the first set her mindset of playing positive tennis in dictating the play, looking to force her opponent into error and hit winners was why she won a set most others would have lost to Radwanska who only hit two unforced errors in the whole set.
The 1.78m Lisicki hit 26 winners to Radwanska’s 11 in the final set again really winning the match in every sense of the word as her opponent gave up just five unforced errors in the decider and a measly ten for the entire match!
Lisicki has defeated three Grand Slam champions in her first four matches and now needs to defeat two former Wimbledon finalists back-to-back to complete her mission, maybe destiny? The current World No.24 has won her past three matches against her opponent in the final, Marion Bartoli, with their most recent match being the quarter finals at Wimbledon in 2011.
About playing the final in her fifth Wimbledon Lisicki said, “I just can’t wait to play on Saturday,” she said. “Marion plays aggressive tennis. I have played Serena who plays aggressive too. We’ll see. Two years ago I played an amazing Wimbledon as a wildcard. This time I feel much more ready for the entire tournament and I have that belief.”
