The 2010 US Open women’s main draw singles matches will begin this Monday 30 August at 11am local time in New York in the USA, which means 11pm Hong Kong time. There are 128 main draw spots divided up between 12 Qualifiers (Q), 8 Wild Cards (WC) and 108 Direct Acceptances.
The women’s draw allocates and extra 4 spots to direct acceptances (108 versus 104 in the men’s draw) and limits the spots in the main draw for qualifiers to 12, whereas the men’s draw provides 16 spots for qualifiers.
The seeded players do not receive a BYE in the 1st round of a Grand Slam event. To win the title a player must win 7 best of 3 set matches in a row. For further details about the women’s event you can visit -> US Open 2010 Women’s Schedule of Play. Being seeded means that you the earliest round in the event that you can meet another seeded player is 3rd round in which only 32 players remain. The players name that is bolded is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match.
Pictured above is 20 year old Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium who made the semi finals at the 2009 US Open. The 1.83m Wickmayer had only ever won a single Grand Slam match before her great performances at last year’s US Open. Since the Wickmayer has recorded her career best results at each of the other 3 Grand Slam tournaments including her 2nd best result in a Slam at the 2010 Australian Open where she made the round of 16.
Wickmayer is the No.15 seed and will be a player to watch on the American hard courts again this year despite the pressure she will have to deal with after her impressive run last year. Wickmayer has recorded her best results of 2010 on hard courts and especially in the USA. At the Miami Open Cincinnati Open she made the quarter finals. Her next best result this year was at the Australian Open as mentioned above and at the Indian Wells Open where she made the round of 16. Wickmayer will be doing her best to continue her pattern of achieving personal best results at each tournament in 2010 at the US Open.
