The 2010 US Open men’s round of 16 singles main draw matches are now complete. Of the 8 seeds that were seeded to win through to the quarter final five of them have won through to battle for a spot in the semi finals.
Roger Federer goes into his quarter final against Robin Soderling with a 12-1 advantage in their previous matches. However, Soderling won their latest match in the 2010 Roland Garros quarter finals. Soderling is playing Federer in the quarter finals of the US Open for the 2nd year in a row and will be looking to repeat his win earlier against Federer to make his first US Open semi final and keep his hopes alive of winning his first Grand Slam singles title after being a runner-up twice at Roland Garros.
Novak Djokovic heads into his quarter final match against 24 year old Gael Monfils with a 4-0 advantage in their previous clashes. Their last match was decided by a final set tie-break in the 2009 Paris Open final. The 23 year old Djokovic is playing in his 4th straight quarter final at the US Open and may come up against Federer for the 4th year in a row if both men can win through to the semi finals. The 1.88m Djokovic lost to Federer in the semi finals in 2009 and 2008 and in the final in 2007.
The 1.93m Monfils of France has achieved his best result at the US Open by making the quarter finals and will be playing his 3rd Grand Slam singles quarter final after reaching that stage at Roland Garros in 2009 and making the semis at Roland Garros in 2008. Monfils will be fired up to become the first French man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Yannick Noah won Roland Garros in 1984 but will need to beat a string of players he has never beaten before in Djokovic, Soderling or Federer to make the final.
Pictured above is 28 year old Mikhail Youzhny of Russia captured displaying his defensive skills with his single handed backhand only a few days ago at the US Open. The 1.83m Youzhny uses the HEAD YouTek Extreme Pro tennis racquet. If you are in Hong Kong and want one of Mikhail’s racquets or advice on which racquet would be the best for you to use, just email email@example.com.
Youzhny is within one victory of equalling his best result at the US Open. Youzhny made the semi finals in 2006 at the US Open and will be playing his 4th Grand Slam singles quarter final. Youzhny made the quarter finals at the 2008 Australian Open and at Roland Garros this year. The former World No.8 is the No.12 seed and won the last match he played against his next opponent Stanislas Wawrinka at the Miami Open this year 7-5 in the final set. Youzhny and Wawrinka are tied at 2 wins each with Youzhny winning both of their matches contested on hard courts and Wawrinka winning both of their matches played on clay courts.
Rafael Nadal will be the heavy favourite to win his quarter final for a variety of reasons including his 11-0 record against Fernando Verdasco and the fact that Verdasco had a lot of injury treatments in his amazing comeback from 2 sets to love down victory in the final set tie-break against No.10 seed David Ferrer. After that display you cannot count Verdasco out as he takes on the clearly dominant player of 2010 and fellow Spaniard.
OCA will keep you updated with all of the quarter final results as matches are completed, right here on this post. The matches from the bottom half of the draw scheduled for today with the top half of the draw to be completed tomorrow.
The player’s name that is bolded in the quarter finals draw below is OCA’s prediction of who will win each match. Any player whose name is italicised and has his first name removed is a seeded player who was expected to win through to the quarter finals.
