The Top 3 favourites are Serena Williams, Dinara Safina and Venus Williams.
Serena Williams will be chasing her 4th US Open crown. The defending champion won her 3 US Open singles titles to date in 1999, 2002 and 2008. A victory at the US Open will tie Serena to Billie Jean King’s record of 12 Grand Slam singles titles. This would leave only 5 women to have won more singles slams than Serena.
Venus Williams will be looking to bounce back from her defeat at the hands of her younger sister in this year’s Wimbledon final. Venus will have to maintain the great from she displayed to add another US Open singles title to her victories in 2000 and 2001.
Venus has only reached the semi finals of a Grand Slam event other than Wimbledon once since the 2003 Australian Open. Given that track record her matches at the US Open should provide great entertainment and a reasonably high chance that she will be the victim of a big upset by a younger player.
The Williams sisters have won 5 of the past 10 US Open titles. The likelihood of another all-Williams final DOES NOT seem to be on the cards. One more all-Williams Grand Slam final would place them in 2nd place at 8 meetings at that stage in a Slam. The record of 14 meetings in Grand Slam finals is held by Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
Dinara Safina needs to use her experience in losing 3 Grand Slam finals to break her losing streak in these finals. To win her 1st Grand Slam singles title the current world No.1 will have to make her main focus keeping her nerves and emotions under control. Dinara whilst on-court must try to constantly repeat this mantra to herself “whatever happens nothing can get to me, today is MY day and yes I CAN do it!”
Can another woman step up and defeat the defending US Open champion?
Last year’s female winners were:
Women’s singles – Serena Williams
Women’s doubles – Cara Black and Liezel Huber
Mixed doubles – Cara Black (with Leander Paes)
Junior girl’s singles – CoCo Vanderweghe
Junior girl’s doubles – Sandra Roma and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn
