in Grand Slams: Australian Open

Novak Djokovic serving at Australian OpenThe 2012 Australian Open tennis championships is the next Grand Slam singles tournament for the men’s professional tennis tour. “The Aussie Open” or “The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific” as the Australian Open is also known, is held at Melbourne Park in Richmond on True Blue Plexicushion Prestige medium-paced hard courts. To watch the tennis in Singapore subtract 3 hours from the Melbourne local times listed below.

The men’s event begins on January 11 with the qualifying singles draw and the Men’s Singles Final will be played on Sunday 29 January. Since 1988 the Australian Open has been played on hard courts and it is the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments that are played each year. The Australian Open was first held in 1905 and was played on natural grass courts through to 1987.

Please leave a comment below this article regarding anything YOU would like to know about in tennis, have explained or suggest for me to write about here at OnCourt Advantage. Click this link for details about how you can buy Australian Open Official tennis tickets.

The total financial commitment for the 2011 Australian Open tournament was 23,140,000 Australian dollars with the total prize money for the men’s singles event being $10,000,000. Those figures were an increase of %3.8 as compared to 2010. The winner of the Men’s Singles Final at the 2012 Australian Open receives a record $2.3million, which is an increase of $100,000 on the 2011 prize money.

The 2011 Australian Open Men’s singles champion Novak DJOKOVIC is pictured above at the 2011 event after he has made contact with the ball with the stroke that gives him the most trouble and stress to his right shoulder – his serve. Djokovic won his fourth Grand Slam singles title at the 2011 US Open in his third US Open singles final, by defeating defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal for the 6th straight time in 2011.

The 1.88m Djokovic will be going for his third Australian Open Singles title after winning in 2008 and in 2011. The 24-year-old Serbian won three of the four Grand Slam singles titles in 2011 in one of the best seasons by any player in the Open-era of tennis. Djokovic who also won his first Wimbledon singles title in 2011 by defeating Rafael Nadal, became the new World No.1 for the first time in his career after that match.

The main draw matches are played each day in a day session beginning at 11am and a night session starting at 7pm in the first week and 7:30pm in the second week. The exception is on Men’s Final Day when play begins at 7:30pm. The centre court at the Australian Open is called Rod Laver Arena.

Please note that the tournament management can alter the schedule from day to day, in which case we will update them here straight away.

The ATP ranking points and prize money for the men’s tournament is awarded to the players like this:

  1. The winner earns 2,000 points + $2,300,000;
  2. The runner-up earns 1,200 points + $1,150,000;
  3. The two semi finalists earn 720 points + $420,000;
  4. The four quarter finalists earn 360 points + $210,000;
  5. The 8 players who lose in the round of 16 earn 180 points + $93,000;
  6. The 16 players who lose in the 3rd round earn 90 points + $54,500;
  7. The 32 players who lose in the 2nd round earn 45 points + $32,000;
  8. The *players who lose in the 1st round earn 10 points + $20,000.

The players who lose in the 1st round of the qualifying event earn $2,860 but DO NOT receive any ranking points. The players who lose in the 2nd round of qualifying earn $5,710 and 8 points. The players who lose in the 3rd round of qualifying earn $11,440 and 14 points.

*The players who qualify for the main draw and then lose the 1st round earn 35 points, whereas players, who start in the 1st round and lose their 1st match, only earn 10 points. Wild Card entrants who lose in the 1st round DO NOT receive any ranking points.

The schedule of play for the 2012 Australian Open Men’s Singles event is:

  • Wednesday 11 January: Qualifying 1st round at 10am;

I would like to watch Nadal play his first round match, but I don’t know which session I should buy tickets for. As he is Number 2 seed I presume he will play on the 2nd day Tuesday 17th, but does anyone know if the number 2 seed will play in the day session or the evening session???

Reply

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 8, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Hi Peter,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. As the No.2 seed Nadal will be placed in the bottom half of the draw. The only way to really know for sure when Rafael Nadal will play his 1st round match is to wait until the draw is completed on Friday 13 January, which should be by 10:30am in Melbourne time and then wait until the schedule of play is released for Day 1.

There is no set procedure for whether the No.1 seed (or top half of the draw) will play on Day 1 and the No.2 seed play on Day 2 or vice versa. In 2011 Nadal as the No.1 seed did play on Day 1, yet in 2010 Roger Federer as the No.1 seed played his first round match on Day 2. What happens usually is if the Men’s draw plays the top half of the draw on Day 1 then the Women’s draw plays the bottom half of the draw on Day 1.
As far as whether Nadal will play his match in the day session or the evening session, again the only way to know for sure is to wait until the schedule of play is released for the day that the bottom half of the draw ends up being scheduled on.

If asked to guess, then I would tip that Nadal will be play in the day session for a number of reasons including that in the 1st round the men’s match selected in the night session often features a local player or Australian Open fan favourite other than past champions. As the rounds progress Nadal would become more likely to play in the evening session than in the day session. Of course, if Nadal draws Australian No.1 Bernard Tomic (as he did in the 2011 Australian Open 3rd round) in the 1st round, then he could very well be playing his first round in the evening session!

I hope this helps and please let me know if you would like to know anything further. For all the details that you need to know about the men’s singles draw please click this link-> http://www.oncourtadvantage.com/grand-slams-australian-open/australian-open-2012-mens-singles-draw/

what time does the day session at the Australian Open end? with a day pass can you stay in the ground and watch the evening session on the big screens?

Reply

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 11, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Hi Tom,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. Yes I have official confirmation from the Australian Open that once you are in the Australian Open grounds with a ground pass then you are most welcome to stay on after the day session finishes and watch the evening session on the big screens. The day session has no set ending time; it is over once the final match is completed that was scheduled during the day.

I would like to watch Djokovic play in the semi finals, but can’t work out which day to buy tickets for either the 1st semi final on Thursday 26/1/12 or Friday 27/1/12 at 7.30pm. I’m also interested in watching Ana Ivanovic. Does anyone have any ideas about when either of these two might be on.

Reply

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 13, 2012 at 1:35 am

Hi Rachel,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. The Australian Open schedule sees the top of the draw for the men’s singles played second i.e. on Day 2 Tuesday 17 January where the No.1 seed is placed in the draw. The Australian Open schedule works on an alternate day plan, this means because Djokovic is playing his first match on Day 2. If Djokovic continually wins his matches, he will play on all of the even numbered days i.e. Days 2,4,6,8,10,12 and 14. Day 12 (Friday 27 January) is the 2nd Semi Final day and that would be the semi final that Djokovic’s half of the draw would play and at 7:30pm Melbourne time.

Hi Mak,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. The Australian Open schedule for each day always is made available in the evening before the next day’s play. Usually the schedule comes out at about 6pm Melbourne time. The men and women’s first quarter final matches are played on Tuesday 24 January. Usually they play both one men’s and one women’s quarter final in the evening session, but it is all up to the discretion of what the Australian Open management decides is best for the tournament at the time. You will know for sure on the evening before, but it is a pretty safe bet there will be one women’s and one men’s quarter final played that evening.

Am guessing if you buy evening session rod laver tickets you can’t enter melbourne park b4 5pm and watch the day sessions on outside courts? Sorry for the many questions!

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 14, 2012 at 10:15 pm

Hi Bree,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. It is possible to see what day and where the the players play. The Australian Open schedule for Day 1 is now out, but only for Day 1. Lleyton Hewitt is in the top of the draw. The schedule sees the bottom half of the draw for the men’s singles played first. Therefore, Hewitt will be playing on Tuesday 17 January. However, the schedule for each day from Day 2 onwards is only made available in the evening before the next day’s play. Usually the schedule comes out at about 6pm Melbourne time, so on Monday 16 January at around 6pm is when you can find out at what time, on which court and if Hewitt is playing in the day or evening session.

Good info here. Do you know if you still have to buy a ground pass to enter the grounds after say 5 or 6pm, perhaps to catch the end of the days play, or watch matches on the big screen? I’d just like to go after work for an hour or two and see the end of the play, but not at any of the main courts.

Reply

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 16, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Hi Dan,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. YES you do need a ground pass to enter the Australian Open grounds. It is great value, it is worth it just for the atmosphere – there is nothing like Melbourne in January! There is plenty of entertainment, bands, food, drinks and the big screens to watch the feature matches on. Think of it like you are going to see a live show/band, to the pub or the cinemas.

Thank you for your help.

Reply

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 17, 2012 at 11:24 pm

Hi Kaz,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. To maximise the TV ratings and create a fair value for spectators who buy tickets for either the evening or day session its highly likely that only one and not both of Federer and Nadal will play per session. Who plays in the evening and who plays in the day is totally at the discretion of the tournament management, who will make best efforts to select what they hope will be in the best interests of the tournaments success.

I can now confirm that for tomorrow – Sunday 22 January that Nadal is playing in the day session and Federer is playing in the night session.

Hi Chloe,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. If you purchase a single day session ticket to Rod Laver Arena that allows you to watch the entire day sessions schedule of matches, so for Day 3 of the 2012 Australian Open people who had this type of ticket would have been able to watch the 1st match on RLA No.5 seed Li Na versus Aussie Olivia Rogowska followed by defending champion No.11 seed Kim Clijsters play Stephanie Foretz Gacon and No.2 seed Rafael Nadal against Tommy Haas.

Hi Scott,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. If Federer progresses through to the quarter finals then he will be playing on Tuesday 24 January. You will not know for sure whether he is playing in the evening session or day session until the daily schedule of play is released the day before i.e. Monday 23 January. Federer is in the bottom half of the draw, yet because the bottom half of the draw was played on Day 1 the first of the two quarter finals days will be played by the men in the bottom half of the draw.

Can someone please confirm if you buy a day ground pass, does that get you entry into the night matches on outside courts as well?

Spoke to Ticketek and they told me you have to buy 1 day pass and then a separate night pass.. can someone confirm this?

Hi MB,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. Yes each session i.e. the day session and the night session are separate. Just like two screenings of a movie on the same day. If you love the movie watch it again but you need to buy a 2nd ticket to watch it a 2nd time. If I were you I would watch the tennis day and night!

Not being much of a tennis fan, I have found your site rather enlightening. There is a lot more to tennis than just hitting a ball around. ( I do apologise to all the dye hards I am a newby at this. ) Having the Open in Melbourne and listening to people give their ‘professional’ opinions… it is good to find somewhere you can REALLY go to get a grip on what is actually happening. Thanks for the information and all credit to a well designed and easy to navigate site. 10/10

Hi Olivia,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. If Federer keeps winning through the rounds he will play on the first day of quarter finals on Tuesday 24 January where the bottom half of the draw play their matches. The top half of the draw will play their quarter finals on Wednesday 25 January.

Hi,

Wondering if you could help. Federer and Nadal are both scheduled to play on Sunday 22nd Jan. Would you be able to help me understand which session are these two likely to play in, evening or morning. Seeing that it is a Sunday, would Federer’s Match be likely to get scheduled for the morning if Tomic goes to the 4th round?
Also, is there a possibility that both Nadal and Federer would be playing in the same session or would they be most likely put in to play in different sessions I.e one in the morning and then other in the evening. Thanks

Hi Sarah,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. To maximise the TV ratings and create a fair value for spectators who buy tickets for either the evening or day session its highly likely that only one and not both of Federer and Nadal will play per session. Who plays in the evening and who plays in the day is totally at the discretion of the tournament management, who will make best efforts to select what they hope will be in the best interests of the tournaments success.

Would you please let me know if Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has the form to reach the final and when he is playing as i want see him play

TENNIS: OnCourt Advantage January 23, 2012 at 12:30 am

Hi Patrick,

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting and commenting on OnCourt Advantage. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga definitely has the form to reach the Australian Open final. In fact Tsonga as the No.6 seed is the favourite to win his round of 16 match against No.24 seed Kei Nishikori. This match is being played on Monday 23 January at 12:30pm Melbourne time on Hisense Arena. Tsonga will make his fourth Australian Open in the past 5 years with a win against Nishikori. In his last two Grand Slam singles events Tsonga set career-best achievements i.e. semi finalist at Wimbledon and quarter finalist at the US Open. Tsonga was the runner-up at the 2008 Australian Open, made the semis in 2010 and if he continues his upward path over the last 7 months he could set a new personal best at his most consistently performed Grand Slam, by winning the Australian Open.
