The 2013 Sydney International tennis tournament is one of only four Pro tournaments held in Australia each year as crucial preparation for the players as they endeavour to peak at the Australian Open. Sydney is classified as a WTA Premier and ATP Tour 250 category tournament and the official name of Sydney due to title sponsorship is the Apia International Sydney.

Sydney is part of the Australian Open Series played on the exact same court surface as the Australian Open – “True Blue” Plexicushion Prestige medium paced hard courts. The Sydney International is being held at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, Rod Laver Drive (off Australia Avenue) in New South Wales. The centre court is named the Ken Rosewall Arena and holds 10,500 spectators, the prize money for 2013 is $681,000 for the women’s event and $436,630 for the men’s event and this tournament was first held in 1885 for the men and 1887 for the women.
Sydney runs from the first day of qualifying on Friday 4 January through to the Singles Finals day on Friday 11 January. The 2012 women’s singles champion was Victoria AZARENKA who defeated LI Na in the final 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to win 470 WTA ranking points. The 2012 men’s singles champion was qualifier JARKKO NIEMINEN who defeated Julien BENNETEAU in the final 6-2, 7-5 to win 250 ATP ranking points.
