The official name for Marseille is Open 13 and it is being played at Palais des Sports in Marseille, France for the 19th year. The centre court has a seating capacity of 6,000 and is a GreenSet hard court.

The Seeds: In a 32-player sized draw there are 8 seeded players. This means that all of the 8 seeds are separated in the draw so they play two rounds against lower ranked opponents who are unseeded, before they can meet another seed in the quarter finals. The seeding for the Marseille Open is allocated according to the latest ATP rankings before the draw is made. These latest rankings were released on Monday 7 February.

The 2011 Marseille Open men’s singles seeds are:

1-Robin SODERLING, 2-Tomas BERDYCH, 3-Mikhail YOUZHNY, 4-Jurgen MELZER, 5-Ivan LJUBICIC, 6-Jo-Wilfried TSONGA, 7-Ernests GULBI and 8-Michael LLODRA.

If a seeded players withdraws during the next few days before taking the court for their 1st round match OCA will update you of any new developments amongst the seeded players straight away. That seed would be replaced by the next highest ranked direct acceptance i.e. MARIN CILIC.

The Wild Cards: As soon as each of the 3 players that are awarded a wild card are announced OCA will add their names right here-> two Frenchmen Nicolas MAHUT and Benoit PAIRE plus Grigor DIMITROV of Bulgaria.

The Qualifiers: The 32-player qualifying tournament begins on Friday 11 February and concludes on Sunday 13 February. As soon as the qualifying event is complete OCA will add the names of the 4 qualifiers into their allocated spots in the draw below and list their names right here-> Andrey KUMANTSOV, Thomas SCHOOREL, Stephane BOHLI and Edouard ROGER-VASSELIN.

The 2010 Marseille Open Men’s singles runner-up was No.8 seed Julien Benneteau who lost an all-French final to Michael Llodra 3-6 4-6 in 1 hour and 11 minutes. Benneteau is pictured above just as he swinging towards the contact point between the ball and his racquet making for this double-handed backhand at the 2009 US Open.

The 1.85m Benneteau achieved his best Grand Slam singles result to date by making the quarter finals at Roland Garros in 2006. He is currently ranked at No.66 whereas his career-high ranking to date is No.32, which he first achieved on 12 July 2010.

The 29-year-old left-hander is drawn to play Michael Llodra in a repeat of the 2010 Marseille Men’s Singles Final in the 1st round! This year Llodra is the 8th seed and Benneteau is the unseeded player, which maybe a good omen considering last years result when the 8th seed lost to the unseeded player.

The draw for the seeded players IF they all win through to the quarter finals is:

  • Robin SODERLING (1) v (8) Michael LLODRA
  • Jurgen MELZER (4) v (5) Ivan LJUBICIC
  • Jo-Wilfried TSONGA (6) v (3) Mikhail YOUZHNY
  • Ernests GULBIS (7) v (2) Tomas BERDYCH

  6. Robin HAASE v Andreas SEPPI
  7. Grigor DIMITROV (WC) v Dmitry TURSUNOV
