is the first leg of the Australian Open Series that provides the crucial preparation for the world’s best players as they endeavour to peak at the first Grand Slam event of the year. The Australian Open Series is a 3-tournament package (Brisbane, Hobart and Sydney), all held in Australia on the exact same court surface as the Australian Open.
The Brisbane International is being held for the fourth year at its new venue – the Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson, Brisbane on blue Plexicushion Prestige hard courts. The centre court in Brisbane is called Pat Rafter Arena and holds 7,000 spectators, the total prize money for 2012 is $1,129,050 and this tournament was first held in 1972.
This tournament is a combined women and men’s tournament classified as a WTA Premier event and an ATP World Tour 250 event. Brisbane runs from the first day of qualifying on Monday 1 January through to the Men’s Singles Finals day on Sunday 8 January. The 2011 women’s singles champion was Petra KVITOVA who defeated Andrea Petkovic in the final 6-1, 6-3 to win 280 WTA ranking points. The 2011 singles champion was Robin SODERLING who defeated defending champion Andy Roddick in the final 6-3, 7-5 to win 250 ATP ranking points.
