The 2012 Barcelona Open men’s main draw singles matches began on Monday 23 April at 11am local time at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona in Spain. In this post a number of interesting facts about the men’s singles main draw will be provided, including how the draw works, whom all the different types of participants are, who the seeds are and the seeded match-ups plus the full draw list.
Barcelona is one of only 11 ATP Tour 500 category tournaments each year and has 56 players vying for the title, a maximum of 500 ATP ranking points and € 301,150 Euros in prize money for the winner.

There are 56 players in the draw divided up between 7 Qualifiers (Q), 5 Wild Cards (WC) and 44 Direct Acceptances. The cut-off date for entry was 12 March 2012 and Diego JUNQUEIRA of Argentina with a ranking of No.112 that week was the last direct acceptance.
The Seeds: In a 64-player sized draw there are 16 seeded players in order to keep the one seed for each four spots in the draw ratio according to tournament draw rules. Barcelona has a 56-player draw so only the Top 8 seeds all receive a BYE in the 1st round and await the 24 winners of the 1st round matches in the 2nd round. The seeds are selected according to the latest ATP rankings before the draw is made i.e. as of 16 April 2012. The Top 16 ranked players in the draw at that date become the Top 16 seeds.
