Women’s Singles Results:

The 3rd round of the Australian Open women’s singles championships is now set. After the 1st two rounds are played only 32 players remain. This is the earliest stage of the tournament the seeded players can commence playing against each other.

Only 6 of the matches from the 16 possible matches where seeds were drawn to battle it court against each other survived. 12 lower ranked women who are unseeded won through at the expense of 12 of the seeds, the highest of which were (5) Dementieva, (12) Pennatta and (14) Sharapova.

Pictured above is 26 year old Zheng Jie from China (pronounced Jung Gee-air), after making contact with her two handed backhand drive. Note her great focus on the higher ball! 

Zheng made the semi finals at Wimbledon in 2008 then donated her prize money to the victims of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake. Her best result at the Australian Open was the 4th round last year so let’s hope she surpasses that and No.11 seed Marion Bartoli on the way and remains as generous with her prize money!

Below you will find the  seeded players whose names have a line drawn through them because they were defeated in that section of the draw. The number in brackets is that player’s seeding. A “Q”in brackets means that player is qualifier and “WC”in brackets means that player is a Wild Card entrant.
