Since Wimbledon 2001 the Grand Slam tournaments have seeded the top 32 ranked players in the singles events to meet in the 3rd round. Prior to that there were only 16 seeds in the Grand Slams, which used to ensure that the seeded players did not player each other until the 4th round.
The Australian Open 2010 will feature more men’s tennis than anything else. This is because all of the best players will battle it out in the best out of 5 sets format. Besides the Grand Slams the rest of the tournaments throughout the year on the ATP Tour use the best out of 3 sets format.
A Grand Slam tournament main draw for the singles event consists of 128 players. After the 1st two rounds are played only 32 players remain. This is when all of the seeded players begin to play off against each other, IF and that’s a big “IF”, they all win their 1st two matches against the lower ranked men who are unseeded.
The top 10 countries that have the most seeded players in the men’s singles draw share 27 of the 32 seeds. These countries are Spain with 7, France and the USA have 3 each, Russia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Switzerland, Croatia, Germany and Argentina all have 2 seeded players each.
The 5 remaining seeded players are the only representative from their country, these countries are: Sweden, Great Britain, Austria, Chile and Australia.
Pictured above is 31 year-old German Tommy Haas after making contact with the ball during this forehand ground stroke. The photo is from Wimbledon 2009 where Haas made the semi finals before bowing out to Federer. He has made the semi finals at the Australian Open on three occasions 1999, 2002 and 2007. Does he have one big run left?
There is a 33rd seed this year despite the fact that there are only 32 seeded players. This is because after the seeding had been completed the no.15 seed Gilles Simon of France withdrew from the tournament with a right knee injury. John Isner moves in as the No.33 seed because he was the highest ranked player who was NOT seeded originally.
